So now it is official. Flight 8222 is cancelled and Mother will be celebrating her birthday without her firstborn at her side. Peter is very disappointed that he will not be there at such a unique gathering of the clans, and only slightly consoled by the fact that we have re-booked for the weekend of 7 to 10 May.
We shall do all the things that we had planned for this weekend - with the addition of being able to see my granddaughters performing in a dance show at the Westcliff Theatre - and I am sure that Mother will be pleased to see Peter then. It's just that it won't be the same.
A salutary reminder for all of us that we are not absolutely in charge of our destinies!
